Harley-Davidson has been connecting cultures and people from different origins of life in the United Arab Emirates ever since I could remember. Yes, being born and brought up here, I have come to know this brand longer than any other motorcycle brand. By dad’s closest friend even had 8 of them. What makes a Harley-Davidson rider so passionate and why does the brand command such fierce brand loyalty? It all boils down to smoke and dust and the feel of the wind past your body. It’s about riding, it’s about freedom. And for a brand that has been evolving slowly, 2019 is a significant year as it comes of its own with new FXDR 114 with its mighty 114ci Milwaukee-Eight twin.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH THEIR 2019 MODELS
THE 2019 FXDR 114
First up is the 2019 FXDR 114. Launched in 2018, the FXDR 114 reminds you of a drag-strip type launch and forms an integral part of Harley-Davidson’s 100 high-impact motorcycles, which it plans to launch by 2027. The Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine displaces 1,868cc (114 cu in), it’s fuel injected and pumps out 119ft-lb of torque at 3,500rpm. 2-into-1 exhaust layout produces the characteristic throaty rumble associated with Harley-Davidson and gives character to the FXDR. Upside-down forks, reminiscence of the Japanese race bikes, improves the steering response and its braking and handling performance as with the new adjustable mono-shock rear suspension which allows dynamic cornering and quick acceleration. The FXDR’s new air intake, inspired by Screamin’ Eagle NHRA drag bikes are shaped to enhance the air flow to the engine.
The FXDR 114’s aluminium swingarm achieves a 4.62kg weight reduction (6.25kg vs. 10.88kg, or 43% less) over a steel Softail swingarm accommodating a 240 mm rear tire. Because this is unsprung weight (mass located below the suspension) it has a significant impact on rear suspension performance, and is enhanced further by a lightweight 18-inch aluminium disc rear wheel.
