So Rolls-Royce has finally launched their much anticipated high bodied vehicle or as we would call it “An Ultra Luxury SUV”. With 650Hp and 850Nm of torque, the Cullinan is longer, wider than Ford’s Expedition. Starting price of AED 2 Million means that the Cullinan is designated to grace the garages of the lucky 1% who wants to have the ultimate SUV.
Rolls-Royce Cullinan Makes World Premiere
Named after the largest diamond ever discovered which now resides in the British Crown Jewels, the Cullinan is also one of the largest SUV out there, it literally dwarfs Bentley’s Bentayga. I was fortunate enough to be the lucky few who were able to experience the Cullinan in person a month back at Abu Dhabi Motors. Abu Dhabi Motors is the largest Rolls-Royce dealership in the world as well as the largest sales outlet for Rolls-Royce’s bespoke editions. Needless to say that they had to clout to have one for show, though it was for our eyes only and we were not able to take any photographs. Even then the first impression of the Cullinan was how massive it really was.
The Cullinan is longer and wider than Ford’s massive Expedition and get the all-new aluminum scalable architecture of the new Phantom and its 6.75L Twin-Turbocharged V12 producing 650 Horses and 850 Nm of torque, which is available as low as 1,600 rpm. The Cullinan tips the scale at 2.6T but can sprint to 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds, yes who’s counting how fast a Rolls rolls!!
One of the most important technical aspect of the Cullinan is the fact that it is now sharing the same all aluminum scalable architecture with the new Phantom, comes with “All Wheel Drive” and gets massive, absolutely humongous 23 inch rims. Inside the Cullinan is typical Rolls-Royce. It’s just wrapped and studded with glass, metal and high-grade ultra smooth leather. The most unique aspect to the new Cullinan’s interior would be the glass separation, which seals the cabin from the trunk. This makes the interior maintain the desired temperature while Jeeves is busy loading the luggage into the trunk.
The Cullinan is also Rolls-Royce’s first hatch-back and gets split tailgate. The trunk can also be fitted with two different modules. One can be a custom drawer for your guns and fishing equipment and the other option is a clever installation of two seats and a cocktail table that comes out as you watch the derby at Maydan Racecourse.
What finally sets this Rolls apart from the other Rolls Royce’s out there is that this is Rolls-Royce’s first attempt on the SUV segment. Let’s face it, the SUV segment is going to stay and it’s the best segment for most manufacturers. The Cullinan can handle off-road based on three bespoke off-road modes – uneven for gravel, slippery for loose mud and wet conditions and finally, very soft for loose sand and snow.
The 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan looks to be the new king of SUV’s. It’s bold, imposing and in your face and dwarves any vehicle out there. The Rolls of SUV has finally cometh.
