This review is going to be simple. Take the S450 which we reviewed before and add power to it. A lot of power. I mean a LOT of power, power that is insane and torque that can spin a planet. This ladies and gentlemen is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC+.
2018 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Review
Let’s start with some figures so that you know the scale of the vehicle we are talking about. 612 Hp | 900 Nm of torque | 0-100 kmph in 3.4 seconds (claimed) while able to carry 5 adults in comfort par excellence and at the same time can be reigned down thanks to its massive carbon ceramic brakes. You thought it couldn’t be done eh? Well the Bentley Flying Spur W12S does trump the S63 in Hp but looses the torque game while costing over USD 100k. Even the mighty BMW M760Li looses out with 601 Hp and 800 Nm of torque and a sprint to 100kmph slower by 0.2 seconds.
Ok, it’s true that we are getting ahead of ourselves here talking about numbers like we used to when we played “Top Trumps”. It’s not always about the numbers, though the S63 does not lack in that department. It’s all about what you can do with those numbers and more importantly what you don’t do with it. Much like US and North Korea, it does feel nice to have the most number of nuclear weapons but not use it. Thus there’s something about having a lot of Hp and way too much torque to ever use without severely diminishing the life of the tires. It’s all about knowing that you have and you can use it brings a sense of serenity in all of us. Think about it. Not too long ago I talked about the fabulous S450 with 350 or so Hp which was more than enough, do you really need a quarter of a million more horses?
Yes and that’s exactly why the fine people at Affalterbach does on an everyday basis. They love changing “why” to “why not!”. So here you are, just out of a board-meeting and while driving to the next meeting you end up owning some American muscles and coupes with spoilers and large exhausts making a racket. While maybe slurping a venti skimmed iced latte with an extra shot of vanilla!
Above all, the S63 AMG is an all out S-Class. Which means, comfort is what it aims to provide and the ultimate comfort in that. Around this shroud of luxury and opulence, AMG has dressed the necessities to handle the Hp and torque. There’s a level of dynamic handling so finely tuned that you don’t feel it. The S63 AMG is easily distinguishable because of flared air intakes in the front and horizontal bars on its grill. The wheels are 20 inches which are massive and the rear apron hosts AMG styled quad exhaust outlets. We kept the exhaust note always on so that we could hear the deep burble and the occasional pops and bangs upon hard downshifting.
The interior is very similar to to other S-Class with the same options. Instead of wood we get carbon fiber trim and a new steering which looks more aggressive yet contoured to fit our hands like a glove. The alcantara lining on the steering is comfortable and keep the grip during some spirited driving. The center arm rest carries an embossed AMG logo as with previous years though this is an optional extra.
As with the S450, the S63 AMG also comes with Mercedes’ Energizing Comfort Control, which is one of the most outright awesome feature we’ve ever seen in a car. It features six different programs – Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort, and Training, each programmed with tailor made program to change the climate settings, music, seat massage and ventilation, interior lighting, and air fragrances. That’s right, this car literally tailors the atmosphere in the cockpit to your desired mood and creates a whole new level of holistic in car experience as never experienced before.
Mercedes has cultivated, over the years, a sense of want and need from people who have owned a Mercedes before, those who own one presently and those who are yet to own one. When I was growing up, I would overhear my parents talking to their friends, and whenever the topic came to cars, they would all talk about how much they wanted to buy a Mercedes. That thought has stuck to my head. I have driven the Flying Spur in the W12 and the V8S options, and though you cannot fault it at anything the S63 AMG does each of those slightly better. If you catch my drift.
The ride is firm yet cozy, the interior is extra supple, the build quality could rival that of a tank and all that comes with the new exquisite and aggressive sheet-work with the occasional carbon fiber accents that comes together in a rather handsome silhouette. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is the sparkle in Mercedes’ three pointed star.
