Quite simply the most anticipated vehicle for us has been the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz E63S AMG. It’s now tamed via Mercedes’s AWD system known as 4Matic but also comes with a lunatic mode, yes you probably guessed it right, you can switch to rear wheel drive for the all engaging and brutal AMG experience.
2018 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Review
Before everyone gets too excited, we had been civil this time with our date. So we refrained from using “Drift” mode which enables only 2WD, mainly because of the lack of controlled environment for us to use. Anyways having said this, the AWD is fun when you have 612Hp to tame. There’s something about horses which comes from Affalterbach, pound for pound these are way stronger than its American counterparts and that’s a fact.
The last E63 we tested was way back in 2012 when it had a 5.5L Supercharged V8 giving out 557Hp and 590Lb-ft of twist and could sprint to 100kmph (if you could launch it right) to 4.5 seconds and retailed for AED 580k+ for the fully spec’d version, the one that comes with extra goodies and carbon bits. For 2018, the E63 has lost further displacement and shares a similar drivetrain to that of the AMG GTS, which is a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 good for 612Hp and 850Nm of torque, but this time it gets AWD system so that, us mortals, can lay down the power instead of seeing it vanish in a cloud of smoke like the previous E63’s.
Before I start talking about how good the E63 is I should get something out of my system. I do not fancy the gear shifter stalk on the steering column for any AMG models, the one in 2012 had the perfect one.
Having said that, the 2018 E63 almost is a sleeper. At a first glance it looks like a regular E-Class albeit with flared nostrils and black rims and carbon fiber bits and pieces. The fenders are slightly enlarged to accommodate a wider stance and it sits lower than a regular E-Class. But that’s what makes it perfect, a sleeper that accentuates a gentleman’s whip of choice. A gentleman does not kiss and tell and the E63 is just that, it can open a can of whop a$# at an instant without breaking a sweat.
The drive, even on the comfort setting, is borderline stiff. You get to feel the road and that’s good, because I need to feel the road for a change. That’s when we feel connected and given the performance of the E63, this feel is bliss. It brings back some of the old school feel we seem to have lost in the new generation of cars.
The 9 speed dual clutch gearbox comes as the perfect option for the new E63 and the limited electronic rear diff makes you almost a motoring god when taking quick turn ins. The car is that stable and does not break off and makes you cry for mom. The angry beast has been tamed rather well, but the E63 still carries the dual nature of its purpose. It’s civil and ferocious when you need it to be. It is as happy running errands around town as it is smashing lap records at the track.
There is nothing out there that comes close to it in the UAE at the moment, other than the impeding news of the new BMW M5 which incidentally also comes with an AWD system. And a couple of years down the line, the new RS6 from Audi.
This has always been the case. This rivalry of the German juggernauts are stuff that legends are made out of. It creates fanatics in the petrol-heads circle. You can talk about the cars and their lineage over drinks with friends. And that’s what makes these sedans so so very special.
The E63 is the new and improved Transporter.
