Chevrolet has their fingers in almost every category of the automobile segments these days and love facing stiff competition because of the simplest fact that it makes everyone stronger and better, ultimately a better product for the consumers. Having said that, the small sedan segment is not hotly contested in the Middle East but I am sure that with the worldwide economy going through a lean patch, this segment which is filled by the Chevrolet Spark would be a hotly contested one.
2017 Chevrolet Spark LT Review in Dubai
Representing this segment is the face-lifted 2017 Chevrolet Spark LT. It’s powered by a rather efficient and easy on fossil fuel 1.4 Liter, 4 cylinder engine mated to a CVT transmission and good for 98 Hp. As a result, the Spark does not sprint fast which could be a drag here in Dubai but leaving highways aside, the city runs with the Spark is actually excellent. The ride is comfortable, a trait we would credit its suspension and the seats but its size makes for easy parking anywhere in Dubai.
At AED 44,000 for our fully trimmed Spark LT model, it is priced between its two main rivals, the Ford Figo and Kia’s Picanto, which are priced at AED 46,000 and AED 43,000 respectively (we are talking about the top trim prices on each model and not the starting price). This price bracket defines the affordable transportation segment in the UAE, not considering the Chinese manufacturers; at least for this article. The 2017 Chevrolet Spark has actually shrunk in size from its predecessor which is noticeably felt by the rear passengers. But we thought that less is more in this case, the interior layout is all new and more in-line with the user interface of higher up models from Chevrolet. The steering is light and ideal for city driving and what can we say about the AC, it bring Antarctica like coolness at summer, this is where Chevrolet excels.
The uni-body is stiffened up for 2017 and has resulted in the allowance for further chassis tuning. As a result the new Spark offer much better ride comfort than its predecessor. In terms of the infotainment sustem goes, there is an all-new 7 inch touch-screen that support Apple Carplay and Android Auto for hands free communications and more.
Our tester came with a 1.4 Liter four banger engine that is good for 98 Hp, that’s up by more than 12 Hp from its previous model; this has been achieved by optimizing for efficiency, low friction materials and lighter weight, thanks to the all-aluminum block.
So how is the Spark, as an everyday small car it is well equipped. The torque isn’t there to handle the likes of highways but for the city it’s fine. The AC kept us cool and the infotainment system was modern and complete. The ride comfort is what I can stop raving about, yes it’s on the softer side but that’s what I want from my daily. And by far the most fuel efficient vehicle we have tested bar the Toyota Yaris would be the Spark, we averaged a combined fuel consumption of 6.3 L/100kms where as we got 6.5 L/100 kms on Ford’s Figo.
At AED 44,000 for the LT model, you get everything you need from a car of its size. The Yaris for example, starts over AED 50,000 for its base model. And not to forget the excellent dealership support, it would be safe to assume that a Spark owner would always be kept happy.
