The Nissan Patrol has been the region’s defacto off-roader along with Toyota’s Land Cruiser for decades. And while Toyota has come up with an Xtreme edition based on their standard V8 Land Cruiser with a more off-road capable kit, the Patrol seemed to have been happy with its position. But times have changed, and an experiment began when Nissan and their regional distributor, Arabian Automobiles, teamed up with UAE’s and the Arab world’s rally legend, Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem in creating a Patrol that is truly off-road worthy and capable under expert and novice hands, a tall order that took months in conceptualization and the fruits of their labor gave birth to the awesome Patrol Desert Edition.
Nissan Patrol Desert Edition by Mohammed Ben Sulayem
The Patrol Desert Edition starts off from a basic Patrol LE, so you get straight off 400hp and 560Nm of torque from a Direct Fuel Injected 5.5L V8. This is a great platform and has worked well with the Patrol as it also features double wishbone suspension front and back. The brief was simple for the Patrol Desert Edition, it was not to create an ultimate Patrol which would be financially out of reach for many off road enthusiast but to have a proven and tested package that would enhance the basic capabilities of the current Patrol and make it more off road centric without losing its on road characteristics and its daily drivability.
The core of the improvement or shall we say magic comes from the off road desert driving suspension tuned by Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem. 18 inch bead lock wheels dresses up the shoes and provides anti-pop out of the tires which occurs when a vehicle runs on low psi and performs sharp fast changes in directions in the sand.
It comes with front and rear skid plates, when the terrain gets bumpy and we get over anxious with our lead foot causing the vehicle to jump and land, the plates protects the axle and the engine from damage under hard compression and the under trail from slamming direction onto rocks or sand.
And lastly the over fenders which is a cosmetical alteration that creates a sense of being buff. So there you go in a nut shell, the basic components that makes for the Patrol Desert Edition.
What do we get out of it all, one might say? Yes we can buy a basic Patrol LE our self and replace the suspension to King’s or Fox and add skid plates and bead lock rims. The Patrol Desert Edition is basically a version of that right? Yes and no. Yes, to the fact that you can build one yourself and no because the Desert Edition is more than the sum of all its parts. Not all of us are off-road gods, choosing the right suspension is very much individual defined. Which means that I may like a softer setting whether as a friend of mine feels more comfortable with a stiffer set up. I would like to traverse low dunes while others would want to go flat out baja style and jump. There is not one setup that can do everything. It works the same on road as well, a car set up for the track is set up very different to that meant for cruising.
So the Patrol Desert Edition is what I can say as my favorite daily driver with the ability to off road and get me back out safely. It’s priced well and at AED 229,000 this is not merely capable but very affordable as well. So is it a complete package? Yes, we think so. The UAE has great roads and even greater off road trails which are largely unexplored, if you go to Oman the best scenery are off the beaten path. These are trails which a regular patrol can handle but then again you can push yourself to go deeper still. Maybe even courage up and go beyond your comfort zone. The Patrol Desert Edition is a great piece of kit, it adds onto the already capable Patrol and packs it into a nice package while maintaining an easy on the wallet feel.
