A strong grid of 30 drivers battled it out in a total of nine heats, ten drivers per heat each doing three heats. Points were awarded accordingly and the highest points scorer declared the winner.
In this instance it was a tie on points between Dubai schoolboy Piers Pakenham-Walsh and Dubai Falcons ace Saeed Al Mehairi, the regulations dictated that on the occasion of a tie the driver having recorded the fastest lap (of the two) would be declared the winner and thus Pakenham-Walsh was declared the winner, with Al Mehairi second.
Ramez Azzam was third and also the driver to set the overall fastest lap on the night and one heat win, with Sam Zian fourth also with a heat win to his credit.
Mohammed Al Mutawaa, another flying the Dubai Falcons flag, was fifth ahead of Anas Al Halabi and Giovanni Betti who were sixth and seventh respectively – the pair scoring their first ever SWS race victories on the night.
Hussain Umid Ali was eighth, followed by Atef Al Barwani in ninth and Saeed Bin Touq rounding out the top ten.
Kartdrome assistant manager David Bright summed up the evening, “It was a first for the Indoor Kartdrome, with driving of very high standard on a twisty and challenging track the event was a great success. Of course there were some dubious on track moments, but the incidents were far less than expected because of the discipline and sportsmanship shown by the drivers. Now we look forward to the next round.”
The second round of the Kartdrome Ramadan Challenge takes place on Monday, 22 July at the outdoor track.
