McLaren Automotive, the UK’s newest sports car manufacturer joined in celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last week, joining almost one hundred British cars on the streets of Abu Dhabi. The unique celebratory motorcade, dubbed the ‘Great British Car Rally’, was organised by the British Embassy in the UAE and Yas Marina Circuit. McLaren’s debut model, the MP4-12C, joined models from other British car makers in honouring Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and celebrating the strong and historic friendship between the UK and UAE. The cars ranged from old classics to brand new luxury models, all showcasing British automotive history. The motorcade started at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi before travelling along the Corniche to the Yas Marina Circuit and completing a lap of the famous Formula 1 race track.
Mark Harrison, McLaren Automotive’s Regional Director for Middle East and Africa said, “We were honoured to be part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee here in the UAE, so soon after opening our Abu Dhabi showroom. Her Majesty formally opened our stunning headquarters, the McLaren Technology Centre, in the UK in 2004, therefore as a company we feel rightly proud to be celebrating this historical moment.”
The rally reinforces McLaren Automotive’s commitment to the region. In May, McLaren Abu Dhabi was launched as part of the company’s continued growth across the Middle East. The launch was marked by the release of a breathtaking video of the MP4-12C, shot on location in Abu Dhabi, which can be found on McLaren’s YouTube channel – http://www.youtube.com/user/McLarenAutomotiveTV.
The award-winning MP4-12C is the first ‘pure’ McLaren production road car. The 12C draws upon the company’s longstanding Formula 1 experience and features a number of unique new technological highlights that make it the world’s fastest and also most efficient high performance sports car in its segment; a one-piece, moulded carbon fibre chassis, a recently uprated compact, lightweight and highly efficient 616hp V8 twin turbo engine, and the innovative ‘Proactive Chassis Control’ suspension system that ensures ultimate track performance or great comfort on the road at the turn of a switch.
In addition to the recently opened showroom in Abu Dhabi (Al Habtoor Motors), McLaren Automotive’s regional network includes Dubai (also Al Habtoor Motors) Kuwait (Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive) and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (Al Ghassan Motors) with plans to open showrooms in Bahrain (Al Ghassan Motors) and Qatar (Al Wajba Motors). There will also be a service centre in Lebanon (Saad & Trad Sal).
